In 2007 Lorenz Demey obtained a BA in Philosophy (minor: Mathematics) and in 2008 an MA in Philosophy, both at KU Leuven, focusing on the semantics and pragmatics of definite descriptions (supervised by Leon Horsten). In 2010 he obtained an MSc in Logic (track: Logic and Mathematics) at the University of Amsterdam (ILLC), focusing on probabilistic dynamic epistemic logic (supervised by Johan van Benthem and Dick de Jongh). From 2011 to 2013 he completed the MSc in Artificial Intelligence (track: Engineering and Computer Science) at KU Leuven, except for the thesis.
From 2010 to 2014 he held a Doctoral Fellowship of the Research Foundation - Flanders (FWO), which led to a PhD on epistemic logic and logical geometry (supervised by Igor Douven and later Stefaan Cuypers). From 2014 to 2020 he held consecutive Postdoctoral Fellowships of the Research Foundation - Flanders (FWO), focusing entirely on logical geometry.
In 2019 he was appointed as a research professor (BOFZAP) at KU Leuven. He is currently affiliated to the Center for Logic and Philosophy of Science (CLPS) at the Institute of Philosophy (HIW), to the KU Leuven Institute for Artificial Intelligence (Leuven.AI), and to the KU Leuven Institute for the Study of the Transmission of Texts, Ideas and Images in Antiquity, the Middle Ages and the Renaissance (LECTIO).
Demey's research on logical geometry research is supported by various grants and projects, including an ERC Starting Grant of the European Research Council: 'STARTDIALOG - Towards a Systematic Theory of Aristotelian Diagrams in Logical Geometry' (grant agreement 101040049, 2022 - 2027). Over the years, he has received the Research Council Award 2018 from KU Leuven, the Jaarprijs Wetenschapscommunicatie (Annual Prize for Science Outreach) 2020 and the Frans Van Cauwelaert Prize 2020 from the Royal Flemish Academy of Belgium for Science and the Arts (KVAB).
